Building anti corruption values among children in Makassar

A thousand children from 62 primary schools in South Sulawesi played the newly launched anti corruption board game: Semai (Sembilan Nilai or Nine Anti Corruption Values). The event was held in Makassar on 18 August 2015 and was recorded by the Indonesian Record Museum. What a fun way to spread anti-corruption messages in fun approaches!

The Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) said that the recording of this record was to show that the generation of anti-corruption should be formed and prepared as early as possible. After targeting women through "Saya, Perempuan Anti Korupsi!" (SPAK) or "I, Woman Against Corruption", the Commission is now also focusing on children. The event was attended by Makassar Deputy Mayor Syamsu Rizal, Plh; KPK's Prevention Deputy Cahya Hardianto Harefa; and AIPJ Team Leader Craig Ewers.

Fifty facilitators aged 11-14 years were trained prior to the event and helped the children during the playing of the Semai games. These children can play a big part in being anti-corruption agents. During this age category, children tend to have more desire to expand their scope of relationships, develop skills and gain achievements. With these characters, they are at the best age to spread good values to their surroundings.

The 'Semai' game is an interesting tool in explaining anti-corruption messages used in the SPAK program. This game does not teach directly the meaning of corruption. However, children are trained in situations that condensed on the value of honesty, simplicity, fairness, cooperation, responsibility, caring, courage, teamwork, and discipline. Nine anti-corruption values will be discussed through certain situations so that the children could easily digest and imitate the anti-corruption attitudes.
