A stronger civil society means increased justice for marginalized citizens

Over the last 15 years, Indonesia’s formal justice institutions have engaged in reform efforts to increase citizens’ access to justice, protect basic rights and counter corruption. Progress has been made with an unprecedented level of partnership between these state institutions and civil society organizations (CSOs). CSOs have helped craft blueprints for change, ensure independent oversight of reform, and drive public demand for accountability.

However, marginalized citizens have as much trouble accessing justice today as they did in the past. In response, AIPJ is supporting the revitalization of CSOs involved in justice sector reform, with a shifting focus to concrete benefits for women, the poor and people with disabilities. We are investing in a broad range of CSO partners, including those directly working with marginalized groups. A special focus of our programming is to reach the sub-national level to ensure the front lines of service provision benefit.
