Women fundamental to building values of honesty and eliminating corruption
Jakarta, 22 April 2014. The Indonesian Anti-Corruption Commission (KPK) together with AIPJ held a talk show on the Role of Women in Combating Corruption. Speakers on the show included the KPK Commissioner Busyro Muqoddas, and four female speakers: Petty S Fatimah, Meutia Hatta, Ms Yuyun from Mataram, and Dian Kartika Sari. Over 100 women from various institutions and organisations were in attendance.
"Women have a significant role in bringing changes into the community," said Mr. Muqoddas. He believes corruption can be decreased if women unite in efforts to spread anti-corruption messages. Based on a 2012-2013 study of families conducted in Yogyakarta and Solo, mothers have an important role in the building of family values, such as honesty.
The former Minister for the Empowerment of Women, Meutia Hatta said, “Family is the main foundation in building values of kindness. We were taught to be responsible." She also shared her experiences as the daughter of Mohamad Hatta, Indonesia's first vice president, "We were taught to use the presidential official car only when my father was traveling with us."
At the event, the Commission also launched the movement: Saya Perempuan Anti Korupsi (I, Woman Against Corruption) and introduced campaign tools such as books, videos and games that will be useful for anyone who wants to take part in the movement.
Since the launch, AIPJ and the Commission have conducted a series of training activities (train the trainer) for various groups of women to become agents of change, and teach others about the prevention of corruption.
