Supporting the promotion of sign language

On 24-27 August 2016, AIPJ together with our partners participated in the second Inclusion Gathering (Temu Inklusi 2016) in Sidorejo Village, Kulonprogo, Yogyakarta. The event was held by Sasana Integrasi dan Advokasi Difabel (SIGAB) and was attended by more than 400 participants from the local government of Yogyakarta, Disabled People Organisation, Civil Society Organisations, National and International NGOs, schools, universities throughout Indonesia, also media and villagers.

AIPJ brought Saya Perempuan Anti Korupsi (SPAK) campaign to the event and promoted anti corruption through fun games. School children and other Temu Inklusi participants enjoyed playing at AIPJ booth, including deaf participants who played by using sign language. We also brought our partner Pusat Layanan Juru Bahasa Isyarat (PLJ) who promoted the importance of sign language and taught participants simple sign language.

"Being at events like this is very useful for us to promote sign language and PLJ," said Phieter Angdhika. "People came and asked us about learning the sign language, and most of them didn't know if PLJ existed", he added.

AIPJ continues supporting the promotion of our partners and their work in disability inclusion in Indonesia.
