Widely promoting sign language to law enforcers
In August 2016, the Center for Sign Language Services or Pusat Layanan Bahasa Isyarat (PLJ) together with AIPJ promoted the deaf culture to three law enforcement office in Gunung Kidul, Yogyakarta. Basic knowledge on how to interact with deaf people and the services offered by PLJ were introduced by Phieter Angdika and Muhammad Dafi from PLJ to the police department, court, and prosecutors office in Gunung Kidul.
The roadshow was a follow up activity of the law training for deaf activist done in June, and was a part of a long term collaboration with Pusham UII to create a disabled-friendly law enforcement in Indonesia. By recognizing PLJ, law enforcers can hopefully increase their awareness and understanding on disability issues so that they can fairly deal with cases involving disabled people and develop links and network of supporters.
“We're very happy with PLJ's present, and we hope to collaborate on cases involving deaf people," said the Head of Prosecutors Office in Wonosari.
