AIPJ partners share best practices at the 7th IACA Conference

The 7th International Association for Court Administration (IACA) Conference brought together around 250 court administrators, judges, academics, researchers, and civil society organisations from 40 countries to Sydney, Australia on 24-26 September 2014.

In a session focusing on Access to Justice for Vulnerable Groups representatives from Indonesia shared their experiences with conference delegates. Ibu Nani Zulminarni, Director of PEKKA presented how her non-government organisation had built a highly successful working relationship with the Supreme Court of Indonesia based on PEKKA’s research of the barriers faced by  women, the poor and people living in remote areas in accessing the family law courts.

Bapak Ridwan Mansyur, Head of the Legal and Public Relation Bureau of the Supreme Court of the Republic of Indonesia presented on the policy and budget changes that the Supreme Court has introduced to overcome barriers of cost, distance and lack of knowledge on how to deal with legal claims.

In this session, conference participants were challenged by Elena Down, Senior Technical Adviser for Disability Inclusive Development to consider the needs of people with disability in the provision of legal information, making courts accessible, and in including more people with disability as judicial officers, court staff members and lawyers within the justice system.

Bapak Wahyu Widiana, Senior Adviser in the Legal Identity Program, made a presentation at the IACA conference in the session focusing on Succession Planning in Court Administration.  Ibu Nani Zulminarni and Ibu Wiwiek Awiati also moderated sessions looking at Supporting Access to Justice through Legal Advice, Support and Information and Alternative Dispute Resolution Practices.

The Hon. Diana Bryant, Chief Justice of the Family Court of Australia and an AIPJ partner, made a presentation in the opening session on Court Governance Structures and Court Excellence. Richard Foster, PSM, CEO of the Family Court of Australia directed proceedings during the 3-day conference in his role as President of IACA.

Dr Kate Sears, Academic Director of Springvale Monash Legal Services, presented the work of the Family Law Assistance Program and its prospective engagement with AIPJ to support a range of Indonesian University Legal Aid Clinics in family law and legal identity cases.

Alongside the conference AIPJ showcased its court reform achievements through infographics, images, and publications in an interactive exhibition. A lunchtime session was organised at the Australian Human Rights Commission to preview Lies Marcoes' book A Journey against Defeat: Narratives of Women’s Rejection of Poverty.
