Over 420 children provided birth certificates in a special visit to Sukakerta village
The Honourable Diana Bryant AO, Chief Justice of the Family Court of Australia and The Honourable Widayatno Sastro Hardjono, SH., Chief of Chamber on Development and Coordinator of the Reform Team in the Supreme Court visited an integrated and mobile service in the village of Sukakerta, Kab. Karawang in West Java on 23 June. They were accompanied by the Chief Judge of the Religious Court of Karawang, Drs. H. Arsyad, SH, MH.
During the integrated and mobile service, the civil registry provided birth certificates to over 420 children. The Religious Courts legalised the marriages of 47 couples that had had a previous religious marriage and the Office of Religious Affairs provided marriage certificates to these couples.
Chief Justice Bryant said “I will always remember this day and the challenges and responsibility we all face as judges in delivering justice to the people. The collaboration of the courts with other agencies to deliver these integrated and mobile services is a remarkable achievement.”
The integrated and mobile service was supported by the Bupati of Karawang, Dr. H. Ade Swara, SH. The local government in Karawang collected data on the number of couples in Sukakerta village without a marriage certificate and their children who did not have birth certificates. This data collection was supported through the Empowerment of Women/ strengthening Families programme (P2WKSS -Peringkatan Peran Wanita untuk Keluarga Sehat dan Sejatera).
In the afternoon, Wahyu Widiana, Senior Adviser for the AIPJ Legal Identity Program moderated a session on the provision of marriage and birth certificates to Muslim and non-Muslim citizens of Indonesia – the role of the courts and other institutions.
