Womens rights champions contribute to the Listening to the Voices of Women photo-essay

In a reunion of many of the champions of the struggle for women’s rights in Indonesia, over 30 activists gathered to contribute ideas to the photo-essay ‘Listening to the Voices of Women’. The event was held in Yogyakarta on 15 March 2013.

One of the champions, and the principal researcher and author, Ibu Lies Marcoes explained, “This book will be a collective work by women activists, and thanks to AIPJ it will record the reality of impoverishment by portraying the life cycle of women from birth to old age. It has long been a dream of mine to reflect the lives of women throughout Indonesia.”

The book is part of AIPJ’s commitment to bring people, especially women who are poor and people with disabilities to the forefront of Australia’s aid program.

“There is a direct link between access to justice and poverty”, according to Craig Ewers, Team Leader of AIPJ. “This project will help document the situation of women and their interactions with law enforcement. While strengthening institutions continues to be important, an effective justice partnership depends on highlighting and solving the real problems of poor people,” he said.
