Making Justice Available to Poor Indonesians
AIPJ is playing a key role in the implementation of Indonesia’s first nationally funded legalaid system. Launched at the Presidential Palace by President Yudhoyono in July 2013, 310 organisations have been specially accredited to deliver this new service to poor Indonesians.
Working closely with the Ministry for Law and Human Rights (BPHN), AIPJ is assisting with the development of systems and procedures for administering the funds and is supporting the complex accreditation process. In 2013, this involved visits to over 375 organisations to test their eligibility.
The partnership also aims to further strengthen government systems and procedures, with a focus on strategic planning and coordination between BPHN and other government institutions.
In 2014, AIPJ focused its activities on increasing the number of trained lawyers needed to deliver legal aid services, conducted 2 pilot projects providing legal aid in the criminal justice system, and conducted research into the strengths and challenges faced by the new system.
