Protecting indigenous land rights
In October 2012, a company was granted a license to mine sandstone on Botiang Island in Sumatra, communal land under the authority of the indigenous elders. The mine poluted the river, causing serious problems for the communities who depend on it for their daily needs. Community members who protested against the destruction were arrested and charged with criminal offences.
LBH Pekanbaru, together with national environment organization Walhi, filed a case in the State Administrative Court on behalf of the traditional owners. They claimed that the Regenthad issued the license illegally without an environmental impact assessment.
The court found in favour of the indigenous owners and ordered the Regent to revoke the license. Currently compensation is being sought, along with public informationcampaigns to reduce environmental destruction in the area.
