Securing wage entitlements for 17,000 workers

On 30 November 2012, the Jakarta administration decided that because of rapidly rising prices, the minimum wage should be increased to 2.2 million (AUD$205) per month. But the Governor then provided exceptions to 30 companies, allowing them to delay paying the new wage.

LBH Jakarta, one of AIPJ's CSO partners, brought an action before the Jakarta Administrative Court on behalf of workers from eight of the 30 companies involved. The Court found in favor of the 17 000 workers, because the decision of the Governor was in violation of the national Labor law which states that any change to the minimum wage can only be made by agreement between management and workers during a mediation process.
