Key Achievements July-December 2013: Legal Aid Program

AIPJ is playing an important role in the implementation of Indonesia’s first nationally funded legal aid system. Launched by President Yudhoyono on July 2013 at the Presidential Palace, 310 organisations have been specially accredited to deliver this new service.

AIPJ is working closely with the Ministry of Law and Human Rights to develop the systems and procedures for administering the funds, and in 2013, also supported the complex accreditation process, involving visits to over 375 organisations to test their eligibility.

Our activities in 2014 are focused on increasing the number of trained lawyers needed to deliver the legal aid services, conducting two pilot projects providing legal aid in the criminal justice system, conducting research into the strengths and challenges faced by the new system, The partnership also aims to further strengthen government systems and procedures, with a focus on longer term strategic planning and coordination between BPHN and other government institutions.
