Engaging the Next Generation with Anti-Corruption Values

From the outset, Ibu Hartati (Tati) was determined to bring the anti-corruption values to students. She was one of several participants in leadership training course program run by the Ministry of Religious Affairs) from various regions in Sulawesi. As the Head of the Education Section of Diniyah and Pondok Pesantren in the Bulukumba District, South Sulawesi, Ibu Tati has been trying to develop innovative ways of learning for the children of Taman Pendidikan Al-Quran (TPA/Q).

"Every day children learn about religion and study, but we must ensure that they do not get bored. More importantly, we must think about how children apply the values of religion in everyday life – not just by memorising them but also by putting these values into practice," said Ibu Tati. In Kabupaten Bulukumba, there are 484 Quranic Education Centres (TPA/Q), which teach thousands of children from poor family backgrounds.

After overcoming her initial doubts, Ibu Tati proposed an innovative way of teaching religious education through an anti-corruption board game: Semai (Nine Anti-Corruption Values) for the training assignment. She initially learned about Semai through I am Woman Against Corruption (SPAK) Training of Trainers in 2016 in Balikpapan, East Kalimantan. The training was organised by the Indonesia Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) and supported by the Australian Government through the Australia Indonesia Partnership for Justice 2 (AIPJ2).

"From my point of view, the nine anti-corruption values which are explored through the Semai game, such as honesty, discipline, and responsibility, fit perfectly with the TPA/Q curriculum. Therefore, I proposed that Semai be adapted as the Rumah Cerdas approach, " said Ibu Tati. Rumah Cerdas, or the Smart House is a centre for education established by the founders of TPA/Q in Bulukumba.

This innovative approach has paid off. On July 31, 2017, the Smart House Change Project ranked first in the leadership training program. This success is increasingly encouraging Tati and her colleagues in preparing and adapting the Semai game content to meet the needs of TPA/Q.

The work of the planning team has also received support from Siti Isniyah, the Head of the Family Welfare Development Team (TP-PKK) as well as the vice regent's wife. One of a series of TP-PKK work programs, which also commemorates the Islamic New Year 1 Muharram1439 H (which takes place on 21 September, 2017), will involve the launch of Semai for TPA/Q. The launch will also engage religious teachers and students (santri) from 10 sub-districts representing about 50–100 TPA/Q from various regions in Bulukumba.

"In preparing for the launch of Semai, we also involved senior religious teachers to ensure compatibility between the Semai game content and the age of the students. Our hope is that the santri understand these values and apply them during the learning process with other students."

All preparation efforts are carried out independently by Ibu Tati and the planning team. "If we waited for the availability of funds, we would never take the risk of starting. The important thing for us is sharing our passion to provide the best for our children."
